Shake it like a Polaroid picture: Beloved lo-tech film, camera will return in 2010

Thousands of people from around the globe have been mourning the supposed loss of Polaroid’s analog classic since the bankrupt company stopped producing the film last year. The death of the iconic instant camera and film sparked an outcry, and the creation of dozens of fan sites on the Web like SavePolaroid.com and the Petition to Save the Polaroid on Facebook. People have been bombarding the company with requests to revive the seemingly outdated medium and online auctions cropped up selling the last batches of valuable film.

In an era where digital photography and flatscreen TVs reign, it was a surprising phenomenon. But the public’s demand has seemed to do the trick. Hong Kong company The Summit Global Group (which is a Polaroid licensee) and the Impossible Project announced this week that they will begin manufacturing classic models of Polaroid instant cameras along with a limited edition line of  Polaroid film. The film and relaunched vintage cameras are expected to be available sometime in mid-2010. The Impossible Project, which leased an old Polaroid factory in Amsterdam, also is on schedule to begin offering its own brand of Polaroid-compatible film next year.

So Polaroid lovers can rejoice. The time for taking fuzzy washed-out photos is not over … at least for the moment.
