With the acquisition by Tata of Corus Steel, the world was served notice that one of the largest conglomerates in India was no longer restricting its operations to Asia. The Corus deal was audacious and ambitious. In the ensuing bidding war with Brazilian steelmaker CSN, Tata prevailed. Business watchers were left with one question:

Who are these guys?

Tata Group is run by Tata Sons, and has its fingers in a lot of pies. Tea of course — it owns Tetley. Coffee as well. Steel, naturally. IT, autos, telecommunications, building materials, engineering, energy, alternative energy, hotels, chemicals — it is the overachiever of the business world.

If Tata were a TV show it would be a sitcom featuring an ensemble cast of comedians with perfect timing and chemistry that would run for so many seasons it would become iconic and people would quote from its episodes.

No, not Friends.

This one.

Who can take the world on with its guile?
Who can take its British Raj past and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it’s you Tata and you should know it,
With each deal and every acquisition you show it

Money’s all around, no need to waste it,
You can buy a town, why don’t you take it,
You’re gonna make it after all
You’re gonna make it after all

Once you started out with tea and blankets
Then you manufactured steel, and that’s the ticket
Then it was time you started trading,
Coffee, Tetley, automaking

Money’s all around, no need to waste it,
You can buy a town, why don’t you take it,
You’re gonna make it after all
You’re gonna make it after all
